License Status

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 15 hours are required biennially for a single license.
  • 30 hours are required biennially for a dual license.

State Specific Insurance CE Courses

  • Courses must be approved for lines of insurance for which license is held.
  • Effective for Licenses expiring on or after April 1st, 2022: Included in the 15 credits of CE required to renew an insurance license producers must complete 1-hour of Diversity, Inclusion, & Elimination of Bias, 1-hour of Ethics and Professionalism, & 1-hour of Insurance Law.
  • Flood Insurance Instruction (NFIP): All New York licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a 1-hour requirement on flood insurance instruction if the licensee is licensed to sell one or more lines of P/C insurance.
    • Enhanced Flood Insurance Instruction (NFIP): All New York licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a 3-hour requirement on flood insurance instruction if the licensee sells flood insurance through the NFIP.
  • LH/PC-Combined licensees must complete the full CE requirement in courses approved for LH and the full CE requirement for PC.
    • Courses that are approved for P/C and L/H may be applied to the L/H requirement & the P/C requirement, if taken within the biennial licensing period.

Insurance Continuing Education Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • Licenses expire on the Agent’s date of birth.
  • Agents born in even years will renew in even years and Agents born in odd years will renew in odd years. A newly issues license will be between 24 and 48 months duration.

Monitor Requirements

  • Self-study final exams are not required to be monitored.

Reporting to Your State

  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day afterreceiving affidavit completed by you and your monitor along with your monitor’s Monitor Approval Document.

Insurance Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • No excess CE credit hours may be carried over to the next renewal period.
  • An agent cannot repeat a course taken beginning with the licenses renewing on or after 2/01/2009.

Insurance Continuing Education Exemptions

  • Individuals who have a limited line license for which an exam is not required in New York.
  • Are there any exemptions from Continuing Education requirements?
  • Currently, there is no CE requirement for renewal of Independent Adjuster, Bail Bond, Mortgage Guarantee, or Re-insurance Intermediary licenses. Holders of all other licenses must complete the CE requirement as a condition of renewing those licenses.
  • Circular Letter No. 8 (2003) provides for the exemption from CE requirements for those licensees currently serving active military duty.
  • Non-residents do not need to complete CE. Certify completion of CE in home state on the online license renewal.

Method to Certify Completion

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents

  • Initial LTC Requirement:  A non-resident producer must complete a one-time 8-hour LTC program receiving a New York Partnership Certification; a prerequisite course (online) and a 4-hour course provided by Partnership staff (classroom) must be completed. 
  • On-going LTC Requirement: Any producer that wishes to continue selling, soliciting or negotiating  LTC products in New York are required to keep their NY Life & Health license up-to-date and in good standing.
