License Status

Insurance Continuing Education Hours Required

  • 24 hours of CE are required, including 3 hours of Ethics CE, biennially.

State Specific Insurance Continuing Education Courses

  • 3 hours must be in ethics.
  • All Wisconsin licensed resident insurance producers who sell federal flood insurance policies shall be required to complete a one time 3 hour requirement on flood insurance.
  • Annuity – Best Interest Interest Certification: Effective 10/1/2022, before selling, soliciting or negotiating Annuity policies in Wisconsin.
    • (a) a new four-credit training course approved by Office of the Commissioner of Insurance after the effective date of this rule; OR
    • (b) an additional one-time, one-credit training course approved by Office of the Commissioner and provided by an Office of the Commissioner-approved education provider on appropriate sales practices, replacement and disclosure requirements under this rule.

  • Long Term Care Training Requirement: Applicant’s who wish to solicit long-term care policies must complete 8 hours of long-term care education prior to selling, which includes 2 hours of training specific to Wisconsin’s Medicaid program and Wisconsin LTC options. Initial compliance must be met by 1/1/2009. Agents who have satisfied another state’s training requirement will be deemed to satisfy Wisconsin’s training requirements. However, all agents (even non-resident agents) must complete the initial 2 hours of Wisconsin-specific Medicaid and LTC information training. Four (4) hours of ongoing LTC continuing education, including updates regarding Wisconsin’s LTC partnership program, are required each biennium. NOTE: Agents must meet this requirement to sell ANY long term care policy even if they do not intend to sell a partnership long term care policy
  • Annuity Training Requirement: All producers who are licensed to sell, solicit or negotiate annuity products before May 1, 2011 must complete a one-time 4 hour Annuity Training Course by November 1, 2011. Producers licensed on or after May 1, 2011 must complete this one-time 4 hour annuity training course prior to selling, soliciting or negotiating annuity products.

Insurance Continuing Education Renewal or Compliance Date for Licensees

  • Licensees who are transitioned into the new renewal date cycle with expiration dated in 2007 will be required to complete 24 hours of CE at next renewal.
  • Licensees transitioned into the new cycle with expiration dates in 2008 will be required to complete 36 hours for that transition period only.
  • License renews on last day of licensee birth month even/odd years. Licenses issued in even years will renew in even years; licenses issued in odd years will renew in odd years.

Insurance Continuing Education Types of Courses Accepted

  • Classroom study and independent self-study courses and online courses.

Monitor Requirements

  • Independent self-study and online final examinations MUST BE monitored by a disinterested third party.
  • Beginning 8/01/2021, an affidavit will be required. This form must be sent to the provider within 10 days of passing the final exam and signed by the agent and disinterested third party monitor to receive CE credit.

Reporting to Your State

  • $1.00 per credit hour is required to report to your state.
  • State Insurance completions are reported 2 times every business day. If course is completed after 2 PM PT, it will be reported the following business day.
  • CFP reports are sent on Friday at 2 PM PT to the CFP Board electronically.
  • You may also self-report your CFP completions to www.cfp.net

Insurance Continuing Education Carryover Hours & Course Repetition

  • Carryover of excess CE credit hours is not allowed.
  • Courses may not be repeated within the same renewal period.

Insurance Continuing Education Exemptions

  • Individuals who have an exclusive limited line insurance license for credit, managing general agent, legal expense or title insurance.
  • Newly licensed individuals are exempt for the reporting period in which their initial license is issued if they completed the pre-license education requirement during that same reporting period (exemption does not apply to agents adding a line to an existing license).
  • Individuals licensed only for a limited line of insurance that is no longer offered, such as windstorm, fidelity, steam boiler, credit life, mortgage, hail, town mutual non property and/or credit disability. Individuals holding the auto line of authority must complete CE.
  • Individuals who become seriously ill or disabled or who serve on active military duty outside WI may request a waiver of the CE requirement fro a specific reporting period.

Method to Certify Completion:\

  • For Most States you will be able to print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
  • We usually report to the State Department of Insurance or regulatory board by the next business day.
  • It may, however, take your State DOI or regulatory board up to 30 days to report your completion results on their systems.

Nonresidents

  • Initial LTC Requirement: A non-resident producer must complete an initial 8-hour NAIC LTC training course approved by the state of Wisconsin that includes a 2-hour training course specific to Medicaid and LTC topics OR complete an 8-hour NAIC LTC course from another state & 1-hour Medicaid specific WI course to fulfill  Wisconsin requirements.
  • On-going LTC Requirement: A 4-hour follow-up LTC course is required every 24 months.
